Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
