Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
