In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a key Russian oil refinery. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with "numerous explosions" observed at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit objectives on Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials noted that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary providers of petrol products in Russia's south and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive talks with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.
“We had a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, meetings, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Inside the Country
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of Russian activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
The Kremlin indicated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of espionage.
An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources working to offer assistance and push for his release at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
Conversely, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “dancing on bones.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from Ukrainian citizens.
It is due to reopen by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction almost from scratch over the past two years.
