The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
