The network's Premier New Show of 2025 Earns a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
