The Gunners' Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending In the Upcoming Season

The North London club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June this upcoming year.

Origins and Examination

This deal, said to be worth around £10 million annually, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism is due to Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the Congolese government by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda operates as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their following across the continent.

Nonetheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” read an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while delivering local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches develop their skills and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the campaign group Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against PSG in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a banner that read “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

In the same month, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

At the same time, the Spanish club inked a recent contract for the identical duration that has led to the emblem appearing on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
