However, the absence of living witnesses, visual documentation required the filmmakers to lean heavily on historical documents, integrating individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This allowed them to introduce audiences not only to the “bold-faced names” of the founders plus numerous additional essential to the narrative, many of whom never even had a portrait painted.

It was, he contends, a movement that announced the world-changing idea of the unalienable rights of people; a vicious internal conflict, pitting Patriots against Loyalists; and a worldwide engagement, continuing previous patterns of wars between imperial nations for the “prize of North America”.
