Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He contested the legal system and the legal system won.

A couple of months following receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally appears headed to prison.

Expected Incarceration

The adjudicated plotter – who has been subject to residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the next few days, during mounting talk that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.

Previous Comments on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing former military man showed scant mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to offer these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to end up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Location Debate

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent bid to prevent the supreme court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells containing four dozen detainees: “It's practically one square meter per inmate.

“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person expressing views ahead of the ex-leader's expected detention.

Writing in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its record”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the spirits of countless people in Brazil,” he stated.

Mixed Public Response

This could be correct considering the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of numerous others who believe he should be incarcerated for plotting to block the elected leader from assuming office – and additionally scheming to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a representative for the current leader's Workers’ party, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain proper care – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He cannot carry on being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time celebrating the severe handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to visit a prison to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading treatment”.

Likely Incarceration Facilities

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about thousands of detainees, his expected destination seems to be a close prison for police officers and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.
