New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
