New Year Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK
Weather experts are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed Despite Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, so warm wraps vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.
- Travel is anticipated to be impacted.
- The public have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on the transport network.
The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Alerts Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this indicated the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
