Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
