Arteta Hails ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Confirms Havertz Setback.
Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with fitness issues after disclosing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.
Extended Absence for Havertz
Havertz has been out since August due to an operation on his knee. Originally slated to return sooner, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when advancing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.
Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture
This development creates a selection headache for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option after 11 months out.
Defensive Concerns Linger
More doubts involve defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in central defence for the table-toppers.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on squad depth ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a far better place to navigate such setbacks.
Greater Options Key to Title Challenge
When asked if more options was helping their title quest, the manager agreed. “Indeed, because this season has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in various roles, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel Merino.”
Arteta's Support for Suffering Star
Addressing the complication previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I admire greatly for his contributions to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
“His playing record is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return involved playing because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
